The Book of Joshua is written as an historical narrative that retells the story of Moses successor Joshua. The author used a narrative form to highlight many of Joshua’s journeys with God, right up until his death with great detail.
As in many stories and parables the Book of Joshua contains numerous messages and codas along the way for readers to deliberate on. In this book the author portrays Joshua is as the ideal leader of Israel after the death of Moses and creates a theme of comparison between Moses and Joshua throughout the chapters.
